Already that the Olympic and Paralympic Games are taking place in France in 2024, it’s quite an event. But imagine if in addition, you can carry the olympic flame.
The organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympics are looking for 11,000 “scouts” to ensure the Olympic and Paralympic torch relay, they explained in a press release published on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
In details, 10,000 people are wanted for the Olympic Torch Relay and 1,000 for the Paralympic Torch Relay.
Among the 10,000 Olympic torch bearers wanted, 7,000 are wanted to be individual torchbearers and 3,000 as collective torchbearers (in a team of 24 people, including a captain).
What will these 11,000 scouts do for the Paris 2024 Olympics?
“These Pathfinders are all those who live and bring sport to life on a daily basis, all those who have invested in the Paris 2024 Games, all those who are impatient to welcome them and experience them”, highlight the organizers in their press release.
Concretely, the lucky ones will have the mission to carry the torch, in a running relay, over a section of 200 meters, at an average speed of 4 km/hbefore another scout takes over, as explained by the Ministry of the Interior.
Over the course of a day, relays take place from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., i.e. approximately 160 relay passes. And it will be like that for more than two months.
At the start of the Olympic Games, the Olympic flame will leave Olympia (Greece), as usual, before arriving in Marseille aboard the three-master, the belemMay 8, 2024. She will then wander from hand to hand in the regions of France until the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, July 26, 2024 in Paris (August 28, 2024 for the Paralympic Games).
THE detailed route of the Olympic torch relay, is not yet known and will be unveiled in its entirety on June 23, and at the start of the school year for the Paralympic torch relay.
Where and when to apply?
Among the bearers of the flame, are sought “women and men, public figures and local figures, as well as unknown people selected from the general public or people with disabilities”.

To try to be part of it, you will have to go to the dedicated platforms put online by Paris 2024 and its partners. Must have 15 years minimum in 2023.
Two separate recruitment campaigns are planned:
- From Thursday, June 1, 2023a first recruitment campaign has started on the dedicated site for the Olympic Games and its partners Banque Populaire and Caisse d’Epargne.
- From July 17, 2023a second recruitment campaign will open on the dedicated site of the Olympic Games and on that of its partner Coca-Cola.
Other recruitment campaigns will also be organized, warn the organizers, in particular by the State, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), the IOC, sports federations, the City of Paris, the Ile-de-France Region. , the Department of Seine-Saint-Denis, or the Greater Paris Metropolis, as well as the Club Paris 2024, the Terre de Jeux 2024 referents, the establishments labeled “Generation 2024” will thus contribute to this selection.
How are the bearers of the flame chosen?
To be selected, you may have been chosen by a peer, via a call for applications, a selection by lot or by a jury, or even by direct designation, detail the organizers.
They insist: “All the bearers of the flame will have in common that they have been selected for their inspiring life journey responding to at least one of the three energies of the Paris 2024 torch relay”, namely being sporty, embodying innovation, the entrepreneurial spirit… And committing “on a daily basis to a more united society, more inclusive, more sustainable, more just”.
Young, less young, anonymous, well-known personalities, of diverse origins, parity… the selection will therefore not be based not only on sporting criteria. “The selection methods will be specified over time, upstream of the campaigns”, specify the organizers.
Accuracy, as noted franceinfoelected officials and religious representatives cannot apply, as provided for by the regulations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Four captains already appointed
Four ambassadors, relay captains, have already been appointed: Laure Manaudou (Olympic swimming champion), Florent Manaudou (Olympic swimming champion), mona francis (European para triathlon champion) and Dimitri Pavade (silver medalist at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in long jump).
The selection of flame bearers will continue “until the beginning of 2024, when the lucky winners will be announced”, specify the organizers.
With this question, who will last carry the torch that will ignite the cauldron on the day of the opening ceremony?
