The holidays are approaching and a desire for elsewhere is felt? If you’re planning to travel this summer, it’s time to plan your trip and book your plane tickets.

Problem: your passport is expired. Perhaps because of the waiting times to renew it. Do not panic, you do not necessarily need this title to fly to foreign destinations.

A national identity card (CNI) may be sufficient for travel. Where can we go with her? We take stock.

The doors are open in Europe

If you are a citizen of the European Union, you can travel between the countries of Schengen area with your identity card, as indicated on the Public Service website.

As a reminder, this space has allowed Europeans to move freely between member countries without going through border controls since 1985.

here are the 27 countries where you can go: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland , Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Note that the islands such as Corsica in France, Sardinia and Sicily in Italy, Madeira and the Azores in Portugal, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands in Spain, or even Crete in Greece, and Cyprus are also accessible without a passport.

What about the UK?

Since our British neighbors left the European Union, the conditions for entering their territory have changed.

As of October 1, 2021, please note that a valid passport is required to visit England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

However, you can travel by Ireland with an identity card (and also crossing into Northern Ireland from Ireland).

Jersey and Guernsey within reach of identity card for summer 2023

Since April 22, 2023, the identity card is sufficient to travel to Jersey and Guernsey, two islands that depend on the British Crown.

However, there are conditions: you must make the round trip during the day and get there aboard Condor Ferries or Manche Ile Express. If you arrive by air or plan to sleep overnight, the passport is still required.

This experiment runs until September 30, 2023.

Can we travel outside of Europe?

Contrary to what one may believe, one can go beyond European borders with a simple identity card. Indeed, some countries allow French nationals to enter their territory without a passport.

But be careful, you have to follow some rules:

  • Türkiye : an identity card is sufficient if its period of validity exceeds the date of entry into the country by at least five months;
  • Egypt : the identity card must be valid for at least six months after the date of return to France. On the other hand, a visa is obligatory;
  • Tunisia : the identity card can be accepted if you are traveling as part of a group trip organized by a travel agency. “This tolerance is not always applied, it is recommended to travel to Tunisia with a passport”, notes the Public Service website.

If in doubt, the Public Service website provides you with a simulator to find out which identity document is required to travel to Europe.

What if my identity card has expired?

You have booked your plane tickets for this summer, but you suddenly realize that your identity card has expired. Should we cancel everything? Don’t panic, some countries will still accept them, as we explained to you in this article.

Since January 1, 2014, the period of validity of the national identity card has passed 10 to 15 years old for adults.

Your card is therefore automatically extended and remains valid five more yearson two conditions: you were of legal age when it was issued and the card was still valid on January 1, 2014.
