Peugeot E-5008: an SUV to convert families to electric cars

– This is the first time that Peugeot has released its 5008 family SUV in a 100% electric version.

Driving green, an ordeal for large families? The car manufacturer Stellantis wants to dismantle this preconceived idea with its new Peugeot E-5008, unveiled this Wednesday March 20. Like its little brother, the E-3008, the vehicle is available for the first time in a 100% electric version. By renovating this large model, the lion brand is entering the field of seven-seater battery-powered SUVs. A category relatively little covered by the competition, even if we find the Mercedes EQB, the Kia EV9 and the Volvo EX90.

Faced with these rivals, Peugeot puts forward a strong argument: the E-5008 will offer up to 660 kilometers of autonomy, with a 98 kWh battery and a 230 horsepower motor. Two other versions will be offered with a 73 kWh battery, for around 500 kilometers of autonomy. At base price, the E-5008 will feature a 210 horsepower engine, while a Dual Motor four-wheel drive version will increase to 320 horsepower. These ranges will have to be confirmed during approval but, by approaching the 700 kilometer mark, the brand hopes to allay fears linked to range for long distance travel.

Always further but always heavier?

The family SUV extends to 4.79 meters by 1.89 meters in width and 1.69 meters in height. “Generous dimensions”praises Peugeot. Should we be afraid for the agility of the vehicle? With its 2,200 kg, the E-3008 presented at the end of February hit the headlines because of its weight. Larger in size, the E-5008 should weigh 100 kg more. Fortunately for Peugeot, the government is ruling out imposing a penalty on these electric SUVs for the moment.

“Yes, the masses play on autonomy. But we focused instead on aerodynamics. We have better aerodynamics than some small SUVs”, retorts Gaëtan Demoulin, 3008 and 5008 project manager at Peugeot. The manager also recalls that aerodynamics are particularly important on motorways for electric cars. “At 110 km/h, the range is reduced by around 30%”, he figures. A reasoning that pushes Stellantis to seek fairly high levels of autonomy, even if the batteries weigh heavily, both in the vehicle and in the final price.

Peugeot conquering families

Indeed, Peugeot leaves the price of the Peugeot E-5008 a mystery. The E-3008 will be available from 44,990 euros. Without a doubt, its big brother will cost more. Will it manage to stay below the 47,000 euros mark, to be eligible for the ecological bonus? ” We work. It's too early to tell.”replies Jérôme Micheron, product director of Peugeot, without giving any further clues.

With the E-5008, Peugeot wants to win over families with children and “looking for status”. But there is no question of abandoning the core market: “We want to be competitive”, projects Jérôme Micheron. Affordability will be a crucial point as brands compete for discounts on electric cars. Even if the market for seven-seater electric SUVs is not very competitive, competition is much more intense in the field of family SUVs with the Tesla Model Y, the world bestseller, or the Skoda Enyaq, the fifth best-selling electric car in Europe in 2023.

Two hybrid versions on the program

Faithful to its multi-energy strategy, Peugeot will also release the third generation 5008 in a hybrid and plug-in hybrid version. Half of sales should be made on the 100% electric version and the other half on hybrid, with a majority of “mild” hybrids. It must be said that these thermal engines remain very popular among motorists: in January and February, hybrids alone represented more than 28% of new car sales in France.

Calendar-wise, Peugeot plans to open orders for its new 5008 in May or June. Deliveries should begin in the fall of 2024. The lion brand is playing big with this burst of commercial innovations and time is running out because it has set itself an ambitious objective for 2025: to become the leader of the electrical market in Europe.
